Heart-wrenching book. I was wholly consumed by the characters' stories and thoughts that they almost became my own. Since I did not know how the story would resolve, I was sitting nervously on the edge of my seat and flying through the pages, just to make sure everything was going to be alright. With every passing page, however, I though more and more that nothing was going to be alright at all, and it was scary. I felt like I was watching the lives of my friends and I was afraid of what next steps they would take.
If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be sad. Sad, because I felt such deep sadness for the characters and what their lives have become. Sad to see them throw all their potential away and give up completely. It's scary, too. It's hard to imagine that for someone, every second of their life is torture and they are just looking for a means to escape it forever...
It is indeed the right title for the book - My Heart And Other Black Holes - because Aysel's and Roman's hearts are completely empty. They are endless pits that suck all the light out, no matter how much of it you give them. They don't see anything at all that could make their burden of a life any more bearable.
This is a book about a scary and very much real issue. I would not recommend reading it for anyone who is very sensitive to tragedies, because it will hit you - and it will hit hard. However, if you think you can survive through some depressive and suicidal thoughts that the characters pour into you (no pun intended), I definitely recommend it.
