Loved it! A great follow up to the first book. There was a great twist that I did not see coming.

I liked book 1 significantly better and thought book 2's rush for plot twists left me feeling more confusion than thrill.

The Norse mythology seems to have been more than the author was prepared to chew. It was dribbled in, but largely disappeared once some semblance of a Viking world was strung together. The gods make appearances in this book, but are little more than props for the plot's amusement.

But I hated the outcome and the inconsistent characterization required to make some of the twists work out.
Harald was fine, but Snorri a victim? Hell no. Too convoluted for me.

Also, I hate when the MMC feels like a prop and
book 2 definitely got to that point for me. Bjorn had all the structure of a great MMC and I feel like that foundation was thrown away to show he was "sorry". But that meant he also stopped fighting for her, IMO. He talked a lot about fighting for her, but that never really happened. Nobody learned anything!

Book 1 was 4.25 and book 2 was 3.25. They were still better than average because they were engaging and the characters and world were both interesting for what they were.

this was so mid

didnt care about any of the characters, bjorn's chapters didnt give any insight into his character or anything of interest and were clearly just for furthering the plot when freya was off doing her thing. just overall completely forgettable.

also, this author does not know how to use the phrase "even as". for context:

Steinunn screamed, clinging to the mast even as Skade risked another shot before flinging herself at the edge to hold on.

I increased my pace even as I watched Bjorn dismount and leave his horse to wander over to a patch of grass.

His teeth caught my bottom lip, even as his hands gripped my hips.

there are COUNTLESS examples of the author misusing this phrase and it irked me so bad

This month, I read both books of the duology. I’m struggling to gather specific thoughts which is odd for me. I just plodded along at a steady space—I wasn’t obsessed or desperate to read more, but I also wasn’t dreading it/wanting to DNF.

What worked for me:
- I still loved the Norse influence and viking/shield maiden aspects
- I enjoyed the twist/subverted expectations
- I liked diving deeper into the gods and goddesses, especially getting to meet some of them
- I love an imperfect MC and was fascinated by Freya’s choices in difficult situations

What didn’t work for me:
- The romance is a little odd. They start in such a strange place, and it always seems uneven. It’s hard for me to believe they love each other as much as they say they do
- I was really struggling to keep up with all of the character names and decided to just keep reading even when I was confused
- Again, it just felt a little slow even though there was plenty happening. I think I’m missing emotional connection to the characters to really enjoy the plot.

I went in with low expectations after the first book, and while this sequel was definitely better, it still didn’t wow me. I loved the FMC’s growth, and the MMC remains one of my favorites. The twists, turns, and action kept things moving, but I never felt fully pulled in. I also wish the Gods had been more present throughout the story so the ending carried more weight. Overall, it was a good book…just not the right one for me.
