Freya's story continues, and this book picks up immediately after the first book's ending. The book is fast-paced and full of action. It was only the second book this year that I simply could not put down. Truthfully, I enjoyed this book more than I did the first.

Freya goes through a lot and ultimately, it's her feelings for herself and loved ones that drive all her actions. Though she was betrayed by the man she loved, she sticks to her decision of joining them on their journey back to Nordeland to speak to
Bjorn's mom

As Freya continues to unravel the mystery of the visions seen by Saga, there are twists and turns that change Freya and Bjorn forever. Some of the twists were predictable, but many were not, which is what kept me reading. Even when I suspected something, the way the truth was revealed still managed to surprise me. I wasn't entirely correct.

Bjorn goes through his own trials and betrayals which ultimately brings him and Freya together, as they were always meant to be.

My favorite part of this book is the added depth of the side characters and their impact on the main story.  Several battles throughout the story get bloody as I would expect them to be. We also see new mythological beings make an appearance, which was a surprise.

I read this out of obligation - I read the first and wanted to see it through. I really enjoyed TBK but this series just fell serious flat for me.

First person writing is my least favourite, so perhaps I am biased in that regard and more picky than with third person works, but at times this read so “cheesy” with a whole lot of telling, not showing.

The “plot twist” wasn’t that twisty - and honestly the whole thing felt rushed that it all felt insignificant.

I lived the first boom and was excited for this one. However I was slightly disappointed. I love this world and the magic system and found it interesting and unique. In this book my biggest issues is the back and forth from Freya and Bjorn on whether they are in live or not. It felt very juvenile and went on for nearly half the book.  I got to page 167 and was going “we are still on this, really”. And then it felt like there was a sudden switch up and they are back to madly in love.

I enjoyed the big mystery reveal and the action that was caused by this. I really think this only made up about 1/3 of the book and could have been a little more of a focus then the back and forth between Freya and Bjorn.

Great wrap up for the duology otherwise.

The first 50% was mid. Lovers quarrels and a lot of foreshadowing with crudely constructed plot. Because the author wants you to get somewhere. And once you're there, it's a lot of fun and back to back scheming. Very good second half.
I'm pleased it's only a duology, dragging this would have been too much. I kept on getting confused between some characters (Skade and the skald) mainly because the name and profession read the same in my dyslexic head, so got confused more than once. Otherwise, good twists and a lot of death.
