Part 1 of this book made me laugh out loud. Literally. And then Part 2 was devastating. So, a rollercoaster of a book.

No One Is Talking About This is a 2021 contemporary literary fiction novel by American poet, novelist and essayist Patricia Lockwood. The book consists of the novel in two parts and thee acknowledgements and has a total of 210 pages.

The main character of this story is a woman who is known for her social media presence. We, the reader, follow her on a journey through hard emotional times and her relationships. We learn of her view on the world and how social media plays a huge part in her life. Her insights on this also deliver good thinking inspiration for the reader itself.
The thing about the characters in this novel is that we do not get much to know about them besides what the woman tells us about them. That makes it a bit harder for me to talk about whether I liked them or not, but I would say that the characters were not boring or in any way forgettable. They all had their own little wars to fight and that made them individuals.
The writing was immaculate and I really really liked it. There are actually no chapters but each little text pieces that lead us through the story on a red thread. I would not describe this novel as wordsy but I am going to say that it is not easy to understand if you have a simple knowledge of English or rather how literature is written.
Even though I liked a lot in this book I think it is very confusing and comes close to being kafka-ish, which is not bad but rather gives it even more character.
I think this book can grow a very big fan base because it is a very modern and interesting piece of literature which will in my opinion be talked about for a long time. I will definitely follow what Lockwood does next because she has really enamoured me with this book.

Totally did not expect this to go the direction it did. Went from being funny, internet-inspired, white-lady randomness to something more serious.

Das Internet ist schon ein seltsamer Ort, findet ihr nicht auch? Jeder kann hier sein, wer auch immer er:sie will. (Seltsam eigentlich, dass viele Menschen sich dafür entscheiden, gemein zu anderen zu sein, obwohl sie doch alles sein könnten.) Und du kannst hier auch so vieles finden: Beispielsweise habe ich im Moment die Seite meiner Uni geöffnet, die Startseite von ORF, eine Karte über Erdbeben in Österreich und im Hintergrund läuft noch ein Video, in dem ein irischer Typ "Super Mario Galaxy" spielt und sich über jedes Detail des Spiels lustig macht. Spannend am Internet finde ich auch die Tatsache, dass hier jede:r einfach seine:ihre Gedanken mit anderen teilen kann. Ob es diese Gedanken wert sind, geteilt zu werden, sieht sicher nicht jeder gleich, aber es ist doch trotzdem interessant. Und auf meinem Blog passiert doch das gleiche: Ich schreibe meine Gedanken über Bücher auf und stelle sie ins Internet und aus irgendeinem Grund lesen das dann Leute. Ich weiß, dass ich nicht die Einzige bin, die das spannend findet - der Protagonistin dieses Buchs geht es gleich. Allerdings ist das Internet für sie noch wichtiger, um sich selbst auszudrücken als für mich. Sie wurde durch ihre Tweets berühmt, hat viele Fans und tritt zum Beispiel in Interviews auf. Das Internet nennt sie "the portal", also das Portal. Und sie wirkt nicht unglücklich mit diesem Leben. Doch dann bekommt sie mitten auf einer Tour zwei Nachrichten von ihrer Mutter, die wohl wirklich niemand bekommen möchte: "Something has gone wrong," und "How soon can you get here?" Und so wird sie schmerzhaft zurück in die Realität gerissen.

Dieses Buch war um einiges tiefgründiger und emotionaler, als ich es nach den ersten Seiten erwartet hatte. Der Beginn ist schräg, es scheint keine wirkliche Handlung zu geben, sondern einfach nur Gedankenfragmente, die ohne tieferen Sinn hintereinander gereiht wurden. Alles wirkt surreal und irgendwie sinnlos. Erst nach den Nachrichten der Mutter ändert sich das: Langsam entsteht aus den Fragmenten eine Geschichte. Die Menschen um die Protagonistin werden mehr als nur Namen, bekommen Tiefe, Ecken und Kanten. Die Geschichte, die dabei erzählt wird, ist tragisch und schmerzhaft. Es geht um Verlust, um Liebe, um Abtreibung, um Krankheit, um das Leben und den Tod und alles, was dazwischen liegt. Und das Schlimmste daran ist die Tatsache, dass sich am Ende herausstellt, dass dieser Text nicht einfach reine Fantasie ist. Teile davon sind autobiografisch. Das hat das Ganze noch schmerzhafter für mich gemacht.

Interessant ist an diesem Buch auch der Schreibstil. Das Buch wird in Fragmenten erzählt. Es gibt viele kurze Textabschnitte, die aneinandergereiht wurden und jeweils nur aus wenigen Sätzen bestehen, manchmal auch nur aus einem einzigen. So muss man gerade zu Beginn recht viel Denkarbeit leisten und die Fragmente zu einer Geschichte kombinieren, die irgendwie Sinn macht. Später wird das einfacher und die Fragmente passen besser zueinander. Vielleicht habe ich mich irgendwann aber auch einfach nur an diese Art des Geschichtenerzählens gewöhnt. Ich hatte jedenfalls meinen Spaß mit dieser Art des Schreibens, auch wenn die Lektüre mich mehr gefordert hat, als viele andere Bücher es tun würden.

Mein Fazit? Kein einfaches Buch, wirklich nicht. Dieser Roman (?) ist auf allen Ebenen eine schwierige Lektüre. Trotzdem habe ich es genossen, mich mit dieser Geschichte zu beschäftigen und ich kann euch dieses Buch nur ans Herz legen.
