Charlie and his allies search for a missing private investigator, who is obsessed with the Brethren. A fanatical group following a long dead leader who made a deal with a Fallen angel, Belial. The living Brethren must commit murder to keep the dead Brethren from damnation. They are dangerous and elusive. The Collector, acting on his own, kills the Brethren member responsible for eliminating their enemies, and he, in turn, is killed by a Brethren. In the end, Charlie finds the (dead) investigator, solves a disappearance of a person unrelated to the Brethren, and helps unravel the living Brethren. The dead Brethren are consumed by the Hollow Men, now untethered from the Collector. The book felt like it was going a mile a minute.

Too slow too confusing, after reading Dirty south I was really looking forward to more John Connolly but this one wasn’t for me.

Can I 'like' John Connolly's 'like' of my tweet? Would it be a never-ending cycle?
This book was genius at tying up a number of plots, new and old, while developing others at a tantalising pace. It's a book that is satisfying to finish even as I didn't want the end to come (quite unlike certain legal novels where the author seems to enjoy letting the villains escape unscathed. Never going to get those wasted hours back). I want to say "I love a happy ending" even if it sounds macabre. I enjoyed the little plot twists at the end. No, I won't stop gushing.
The wait for Charlie Parker 16 is going to be unbearable ... did someone say 6 April 2018?

not least because I am so fond of what seemed to me was the immortal duo of Angel and Louis, so highly intrigued with the ongoing bond between Sam and Jennifer, and well, what is Sam?!jannenemarie's review against another edition

Usually a big time fan of Connolly's novels. This one did not resonate with me for some odd reason.

A new Charlie Parker book is always cause for celebration. However, I found this one to be lackluster and somewhat confusing. I don't fully grasp the deal with the Brethren nor the actions of the Hollow Men. There's the use of a chapter ending....they ran the doorbell, then The next chapter ending... the doorbell rang, and then the next chapter detailing how the previously mentioned ringing of the doorbell was not related to the hearing of the doorbell being rung. It seems like too much of a cheat to me. But you've got to admire Connolly's imagination in coming up with these characters.

Another worthy entry in the intricate mythology that is the Charlie Parker series. Ostensibly detective novels with supernatural elements; these stories are always beautifully written, elegiac, and much better than they need to be.
