Wow wow wow. Took my time with this book. So much learning, so much unlearning. This is the book that should be a required read in all schools the way To Kill A mockingbird was shoved down our throats, then some real learning could occur. Eager to get my own hard copy and keep it on my coffee table.

Haiku Book Review.
Written history
Made me laugh and cry at one.
Read this book right now!
(EASILY in the running for the best book I’ve read in 2024, if not in the past decade).

I was taught the white version of history in school and this book was absolutely necessary to relearn and widen the view from that vantage point. It does so with both humor and grace without trying to make ugly things pretty. I did get a little drowned in the details, but I’m not much for history anyway so someone who likes the subject more would probably find this perfect.
Graphic: Death and Violence
Moderate: Slavery
Minor: Sexual assault and Rape

Really fantastic. Learned so much I didn’t know.
And written by a fellow South Carolinian!
