I was taught the white version of history in school and this book was absolutely necessary to relearn and widen the view from that vantage point. It does so with both humor and grace without trying to make ugly things pretty. I did get a little drowned in the details, but I’m not much for history anyway so someone who likes the subject more would probably find this perfect.

Bitingly, bitterly funny history of the United States from well before its founding.  It tells the stories of people who should never have been forgotten.  Highly recommended.
