I was apprehensive about this book. I don’t really like WWII books, but I really liked this one. Bernie Gunther was such a fun character. The atmosphere of the book was its own character; it was so chilling.

Didn’t care for the writing style or the treatment of the female characters.

Was unsure about this book when I picked it up at the library. However it proved to be a wise choice - odd but very good.
Picture a gumshoe with a vocabulary that Raymond Chandler would be proud of, working in the nether regions of Nazi Germany and all that entails - encounters with the Gestapo, senior historical figures in Hitler's regime, world famous settings and of course torturings, concentration camps and wartime restrictions and persecutions. Throws in Jessie Owens and the Olympics as well!
Kerr does them all really well. His dialogue will leave you laughing and yet his research into the period and the development of plot are excellent. Bernie Gunther is likeable and ridiculous. His journey through the story takes you with him and allows you real insights to life in Germany/Berlin at that time.
Will be looking for the next two books in the trilogy.

Interesting insight into pre second world war Nazi Germany but the writing style was a bit irritating - too many wise cracks and "pithy" sayings.
