This series has such wholesome commentary on a range of things: community, art, religion, responsibility, and love. I think I had a slight preference for the first book, but I have a lot of affection for the series overall, and will be so excited to pick up the next book.

I loved the first book in the series.  For some reason, just can’t get into this second book. I don’t know why. Perhaps it’s not the right time for it.

4.5.
I don’t think this is as good as the golem and the jinni, but I still love this. It’s beautifully written, the world is incredibly described and feels very magical (while still being mundane) and the characters are interesting. I didn’t think they were quite as drawn out as the original, but I still liked them.
I don’t think there’s many books with this combination of Syrian and Jewish mythology interwoven throughout, but I’m really interested in finding more.

There is so much to unpack here, might take a minute to review.

Suffers somewhat from the lack of a villain. Oh is everyone a "good person trying to do their best in complicated circumstances"?
