I also didn’t notice on first read that Louis owned human beings??? And he is so torn up about being a vampire aka “evil killer of humans” but never once does he ponder the extreme harm and evil of human trafficking he engaged in as a plantation owner in the 1760s.
I will say I love Rice’s writing style. Her prose is incredibly evocative and often very beautiful. This story sticks with you for a reason.

The book, I never liked as much - frankly, it’s bit of a slog at times, showering you with unnecessary words where much fewer would suffice. I’m sure at least half its shine stems from nostalgia. But like with the movie I’m fond fond fond and will keep coming back…

Within Louis's tale of love and loss in New Orleans and Paris, he tells the tale of Lestat de Lioncourt, the vampire who turns him, gives him the Dark Gift. And of Claudia, the child turned vampress who never ages physically. It's an engaging tale, but Louis tends to brood, and he whines his way from being a slave-owner in New Orleans to living the (confirmed) bachelor lifestyle in New Orleans before he and Claudia head to Eastern Europe, and from there to Paris, where he meets Armand.
Things happen, but the story is very slow to start. And it is slow going to reach the climax. Technically, it ends on a cliff-hanger, but a very small one.
