A few months ago, in my review of 11/22/63, I mentioned that it might end up being my favourite book by Stephen King. Well, I am seriously reconsidering that claim right now (very minor spoilers follow).
The Green Mile was published serially in six parts in 1996. The first two parts are where the story is set up. But once we get to part 3, that's when it really starts. I had to stop myself from reaching the end, just because I did not want to read Coffey's execution.
A special note for Mr. Jingles. I have never liked a mouse as much as Mr. Jingles (yes, including you Mickey Mouse). I loved those instances in the book where he is the focus.
As soon as I finished it, I rushed to watch the movie. I felt it was a very faithful adaptation of the source material. Special shout out to Michael Clarke Duncan (R.I.P) for his phenomenal performance as Coffey. It was in its "making of" documentary where a sentence by Tom Hanks stayed with me, "You are always in the hands of someone (Stephen King) who is just the best storyteller around the campfire."
And that brings me to my final point: Stephen King. Stephen King is a storyteller, and perhaps the best we still have around. I think that is why he does so well with any genre he picks up; because he is telling a story. I think people that simply label him as "the horror guy" are doing themselves a great disservice by not reading his works like The Green Mile, Different Seasons among others.
