Stephen King did it again with incredible character development! I cringed, was outraged, and even cried. A particular Old Sparky scene was so vivid and horrifying, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Quickly one of my top fave novels of King’s and I want to re-watch the movie now.

Really mixed feelings on this one. The writing itself was compelling and allowed me to get through this one easily. The setting was interesting too and well developed.

But this book is so racist y’all. It’s set in the 30s so it makes sense the characters are written to be racist but king seems unaware that his “soulful” writing makes full use of well-known racist tropes.  The white mc is of course miraculously not racist in a town and world filled with Jim Crow era white supremacists. He somehow rises above it all as the rest of the characters in this book happily support his journey examining the cruelty of his line of work while executing a man he knows is innocent. This man reassures him he doesn’t have to feel bad so our mc can execute him in peace. Mc’s fellow guards are totally interchangeable and have no personalities of their own and his wife exists to cook for him and have sex with him.

Good start, intriguing, and I get what he was trying to go for but I think it just totally failed. Could’ve been done so much better.

the type of emotion stephen king trying to evoke making us feel bad for a convicted rapist and a murderer i think it says more about us than Delacroix like yes we see you as a really terrible person but also we see the human side of you and we never let that slip our minds as you let it slip yours and did what u’ve done for the people you hurt.

i also found myself feeling really bad for percy? as i recall he knew the not wetting the sponge would do something but didn’t think it would turn out that way it was horrible what he’s done but it was a mistake all the same and for him to go insane for that at the age of 19 kind of didn’t sit right with me

okay now let’s talk about the elephant in the room….john coffey’s healing powers….
i think it’s something we’re supposed to sweep under the rug and not linger on because i simply can’t think of a better alternative and that one was good enough

i complained a lot about steamboat willy (mr jingels) and how it seemed irrelevant but at the end nothing made me real emotional like the mention of him

i really liked the relationship between the four officers also the pacing of this book i expected to be real bored but i wasn’t i felt like i was on that E block myself

This book was really good and really depressing at the same time. I would recommend it to those looking for a good story with a lot of heart, some laughs, and is very deep.
