This resonated with me as I’ve lived some of these experiences myself, as a Latina.
It’s powerful, at times gut wrenching, and educational for non-Latinx people.

I appreciated the diversity in stories. I learned things about Latinidad I did not know. Highly recommend this. Short stories allow you to come back later!

Wowowwow so much goodness in such short vignettes! Breathtaking narratives from authors sharing their Cuban, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Panamanian (and so many more Latinx voices!) experiences. Each unique story tackled relevant issues like intersectionality and imposter syndrome, and some more complex issues like internalized racism and religious dysphoria (note: not sure if that's an actual term but a topic one author grappled with). I particularly enjoyed #Julian4Spiderman chapter!

Popsugar 2022 reading challenge #6

An absolutely wonderful group of essays by both established and up-in-coming authors. These essays deal with identity -- short, simple, to the point. Exploring different topics surrounding race and culture, the authors explore what it means to be Latinx, Black, or fill in the blank. Insights like these are great examples of how race, culture, identity, politics, etc., play into finding oneself in this world.

I burned through these essays (on audiobook, which is well worth it!) in one sitting. That being said, I'm not sure that it wouldn't have been better to read one essay each day. The content is something you truly should sit and think about. And some of the identity issues are repeated (because they exist in the lives of multiple people) which may not work for some readers. I loved it so much I just couldn't stop listening and went all the way through! Adored it.

I instantly added all of these authors to my "watch" list! (If they were not already there)

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this eARC of the anthology (for which I was SUPER excited for). 4/5 stars.

This was WAY more critical in terms of theory and positionality than I expected. I was honestly expecting this to be geared more YA, but I would expect these texts to be read at a critical level in college courses or DEI courses. I do think high schoolers could handle them -- and need to read them -- but it would require a lot of frontloading of information for them to understand it.

Past my teacher perspective -- this book is not and was not meant for me. I say this honestly as a white woman. It was eye opening and I knew and can understand many of the problems and critical theory within the text, but I am not meant to connect with it. I am not the target audience for this text -- and that is okay.

I also was thrilled with the inclusion of Black voices within the Latinx diaspora. I was not expecting the dynamic and varied amount of voices. It was beautiful. It provided a critical look at the foundations in the Latinx community, the anti-Blackness within the community, and the work that needs to be done.

The essays were powerful and poignant. SUCH a good read.

I learned so much from this book I'm not even sure how to write about it. Mostly I learned about my own anti-blackness within my Latinidad. I was aware of colourism but this book took me much deeper. It brought my privileges as a white-presenting Latina right up to my face so I could take a good hard look. It was eye opening to read the words of my Black Latinx community members (I am not black but they are members of my community). The racism inflicted from within, the intersectionality of their hardships. I'm so glad I picked up this book. And I will strive to do better, and teach my white Latinx kids to do the same.
