I was admittedly a little disappointed by the novella, but not so much as to ruin my experience.

As always I adored Silas, he was a delight and most of my notes are about him being great. There’s just something about him that’s wildly endearing and makes him a blast to read about.

I also thought the general concept of a house harassing the main ship to get together properly funny. It was fun to watch it play out and the characters realise what was going on.

I also really enjoyed the sections where Elisabeth got to work with the grimoires. Showing off her skill and the detail and methods in maintaining, caring for, and restoring them genuinely interested me. I wish we had gotten more of it in A Sorcery of Thorns.

However I did find the plot structure and beats lacking. Everything just felt very loose and barely strung together. It just didn’t have the flow I’m used to from the first book.

The romance also felt like it advanced far too quickly, especially from where we left off in a Sorcery of Thorns. I think it would have benefited from more time between the end of book one and the start of the novella or not pushing for as much advancement in the relationship as we saw.

Overall it was a fine read and I enjoyed myself, I just had a few issues here and there that brought it down for me.

This was a fun novella to read. I loved getting to see a bit more about these characters especially as Sorcery of Thorns was left somewhat open ended.
I had a lot of fun reading this I think I could happily read more novellas about these characters getting up to more things like battling their own house to be able to get outside the front door. Or even a whole other full length novel if Margaret Rogerson ever decides she wants to write more in this world. I hope she does because I feel like there's still loads left that could be explored.

A cute novella! I did like how it didn't gloss over Nathaniel's PTSD and disability from the events of Sorcery of Thorns. But, overall, this is a cute story.
