Okay not going to lie, I ALMOST DNF-ed this one. I knew going in that there was going to be quite a bit of violence, but what I was NOT prepared for was the graphic descriptions of gore. I feel like that went a bit too far sometimes, but admittedly I’m not much of a dark romance or horror kinda person so maybe I’m just sensitive to it. The descriptions of the way the disease spreads alone (no details here, but EW) almost made me shut the book, but I got far enough in that I figured I’d go ahead and push through. Luckily for me, the last 25% or so of the book really picked up! I enjoyed finally getting to some of the romance and the heist/mind game/social politics aspects that came to fruition. Despite my initial hesitations, the ending of this book made me desperate to know the end of this story so book 2, here I come!

Secret Shanghai is officially one of my favourite world's I've ever visited, and I'm glad to know the story doesn't end here. I enjoyed almost everything — the monster plotline could have been executed a little better — but I'm only taking 0.5 stars off for that. My absolute favourite thing in addition to the dynamic between Juliette and Roma was
everything about the brain-infesting insects (I'm a biology student...), though I must say the science stuff also felt a bit off and/or too modern for the time, for example the term 'viral' wasn't really used until the 1940s, and what were those machines in Lourens's lab, how did they work?
I need more specific answers, I'm curious — in all seriousness, I'm just a nitpicking nerd. Nevertheless, Gong has done an excellent job researching and creating all this, big kudos to her <3

Too much detail on the gore of what happened with the "madness" from the *spoiler alert* nasty engineered insects.

this book is not as complex as it seems to be (or rather has the potential to be)
this book speaks on colonialism, racism and white supremacy, murder, betrayal, politics, and other humanitarian topics but somehow oversimplifies and brushes off those topics to follow a clumsy mystery where our romeo & juliette must work together despite their previous murderous betrayals.  see, the thing about shakespeare’s romeo & juliette is that the reader wants to root for them.  roma & juliette cai aren’t likable characters that i felt didn’t actually love each other.
i could go on, but honestly there are many other reviews i’ve seen that correspond to the way i feel, so i won’t beat a dead horse

DNF @ 50%

LOVED the premise, wasn’t a fan of the execution outside of the discussion of colonialism and race. I really wanted to feel connected to the characters, but I just wasn’t.

This book took me FOREVER to finish. I'm just glad I managed to get it done this year. Good riddance.

This has such a promising plot, but sadly the execution does not live up. The pacing is the obvious culprit. The plot moves at a snail's pace and each chapter barely reveals one minuscule crumb of plot point. It takes forever to get the main plot going, and none of the side plots are interesting enough to make up for it.

The other problem is Roma, and by extension, the White Flowers. They're not nearly as fleshed out as the Cai's, and they get far less screen time. Roma has no real personality besides being the love interest, and Benedikt and Marshall are just... there. In comparison to Juliette's relationships with her cousins, the White Flowers boys just don't measure up. Roma's place within the White Flowers is also murky and the gang just does not seem as threatening in comparison.

Also, the twist villain. It was obvious from the first meeting. I would like to think I wouldn't have a problem with guessing twists, but reading 400 pages just to find out what I guessed all along was anti-climactic to say the least.

Looks like this series might be DNFd. I can't take another 5 months for just one book.

These Violent Delights had been on my TBR for quite a long time and I finally got around to picking it up when I saw @KaylaRaeReads was reading it. To me this was a four star book, not because of any plot or writing issues, but because I didn’t feel myself wanting to pick it back up after each time I had to put it down. I know that sounds awful! But there wasn’t anything wrong with the story, honestly. When I was in it, I was in it, and it had plenty of character complexity and twists and turns, but I didn’t find myself drawn back when I was away, like I normally would with a good book.  I couldn’t tell you why, maybe because it’s a Romeo and Juliet retelling, so on some level I knew the end? (Although, trust me, this is nothing like Romeo and Julet!) Whatever the reason, in the end I will finish the duology and I definitely want to read the spin-off. Hopefully something will click with me when I read the next book.

Things I liked:
+ Juliette is a badass and unapologetically morally grey female and I love her for it!
+ The setting is one I have limited experience with and I really enjoyed learning it!
+ There are subtle twists and huge turns and I didn’t expect any!

Thing I didn’t like:
- Gross bugs!
- Weird science. I am all for sci-fi, but I felt it didn’t fit the whole rest of the story and the tone and there didn’t seem to be any “actual” science to back it up (I know sci-fi science isn’t “real,” but like plausible fiction is what I mean).
