Shoua is not allowed to go on the camping trip with her grandfather, father and brothers because she is a girl and should stay home learning how to do things like taking care of the house and cooking. She believes that she should be given a chance. After her mother shares a dream she had with grandfather, he changes his mind. As a shaman he believes dreams can be meaningful.

I loved that this is a story that shares the Hmong heritage, but more than that deals with a girl finding the strength in herself to step out and use her strengths even when others don't see them.

There is also some sharing about how to keep hold of one culture while learning another.
