This is definitely a very interesting and unique fantasy novel and it has wonderful, fully fleshed - out characters and great worldbuilding. However, while I enjoyed the book when reading it, I struggled to pick it back up and honestly could have DNFed it with ease. Slightly disappointing but will still definitely read more from Sanderson!

Absolutely addictive. A new favourite
I have a lot to say about this one. Going in I really didn’t expect much based on what I had heard. It was Sanderson’s first book and everyone said it was his weakest. While I agree that the first half is kind of a slog the back half, and especially the last 50 pages or so, are amazing and the character arcs and payoffs are some of the best ever. I think since Sanderson was so excited about this his first book he just threw everything at the wall to see what would stick. It’s a romance book, political thriller, critique on religion, and action/adventure book all in one. While he should have only focused on one or two of these it still works well for the most part. Lastly, while my opinion on this might not be valid, I think Sanderson is pretty much the only male author that is able to write female characters just as well as female authors. His female characters are never weak or bystanders, they have amazing story arcs and Sarene was by far my favorite of the three POVs. He is able to craft characters that are human and flawed, meaning anyone can relate to his characters no matter their gender.

really interesting premise. i probably would have made this 3.75-4 stars instead but the first ~50% of the book is extremely slow. once it takes off, it doesn’t stop. i hope i get to see a sequel at some point, there are some loose ends that are really interesting and i think it could be cool to see where brandon sandersons writing has reached between his first book and now.
i loved sarene and she is an absolute baddy. raoden is a cool character too and it was interesting to see both sides of the wall.
i feel like the main issue of magic not working and shaod had so much of it figured out in the span of like 100 pages. i wish it would have had some more lore build up.
