This book is a ride. It had a pretty progressive storyline, for the most part not lingering too long before pushing it forward ... right up until the end. The ending chapters is what really tanked the book for me. Too many attempts to throw another layer onto the storyline and then it seemed to just draw unnecessarily out with self narration. The ending was unpredicted, I will say that.
Another psychological thriller that kept me in suspense to the end.

This was one of the first times I've come across a book that I had to put down at night not because it was time to go to sleep, but because I knew if I kept reading the likelihood of me having nightmares would only increase. That being said, I found this book to be incredible.
This thriller had me guessing and holding my breath until the very last page, never once disappointing me. Told between alternating perspectives, there was an eery sense of always being watched and never knowing who to really trust.

Jessica Farris is a makeup artist with a troubled past. Her younger sister was permanently injured in an accident and Jess blames herself. She was abused by a higher up at her last place of employment but never spoke up about it, instead finding a different job and avoiding her former friends. Both those things play part in her emotional disconnect from other people, while also dealing with stress through one night stands.
When Jess becomes aware of a study on ethics and morality, that pays $500 for a few hours of time, she fibs her way into the program. Within a few questions, answered on a computer, with no one else in the room, she become the focus of the unseen researcher and soon becomes the only person in the research group. Next she actually meets the researcher, Dr. Shields, face to face and is offered much more money to participate in more involved research.
What started with a spur of the moment attempt to earn some quick money turns into a very scary and dangerous relationship with a researcher who won't let go. Dr. Shields learns all of Jess's secrets and then, as she asks more of Jess, holds those things against her, to get what she wants. At times Jess tries to turn things around so that she is less the prey and more the predator but Dr Shields is always one step ahead. Thomas, Dr Shields husband, is introduced into the mix and things get more complicated and and deceitful.
The story is told from alternating views of Jess and Dr. Shields, as Jess realizes she's become trapped in something she may not be able to escape. I enjoyed the book very much although it was hard for me to relate to Jess, who took risks that I would never take myself. Still, I loved reading this book and wondering where it was all going with Jess, Dr Shields, and Thomas and seeing if Jess could make it out of the mess her life had become.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for this ARC.

Starting this book out it had such a slow start. I didn’t really know where it was going. The last 200 pages
We’re really the only good parts of the book.

QOTD: Could you tell a lie without feeling guilt?
My Review:
The QOTD is the first question on a questionnaire Jess is about to take. The questionnaire is a morality test. Jess is participating in this study under false pretense, so how will she do on a test that is asking her to be honest, provide her first and instinctive response, and expand on her response thoroughly? She must have done well since Dr. Shields selects her for further testing which will provide her with some financial relief.
Jess is soon discovering that Dr. Lydia Shields is more than what meets the eyes and that this expanded experiment is becoming dangerous. There is much at stake and Jess is feeling trapped. How can she end this experiment without hurting those she loves?
I want to thank NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advanced copy of An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. This nail-biting thriller will be available at your favourite bookstore on January 8, 2019.
