I was hooked from the first page. Well written and captivating, this book is a gem. Small twists and turns kept me reading well past my bedtime. The ending seemed a little rushed, but it does not deter from a 4.5 star rating.

So good! Page turner that kept me up late every night!
mysterious tense fast-paced

Pretty solid book. The wtfery was just the right amount, with the last chapter being a major win for the protagonist.

Definitely solid writing, I'll read more by these authors.

Eh, fine. I just didn't really like any of the characters.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book; even more than The Wife Between Us by the same authors. Keeps you on your toes, and every time you think you know what’s going on or what’s going to happen next, it twists.

This was not for me. It felt like such a slog to get through and took me a long time - which is unlike me - so mostly I just felt annoyed by it. The main thing I hated was the writing style for Dr Shields' segments. It's written largely in the passive voice, broken up by random seemingly philosophical proclamations, all with very short sentences. I think that they are meant to seem smart and intimidating but mostly their thought process and self-perception just made me cringe. It reminded me a lot of other books I've read where characters do criminal profiling - I think because they also use "You do this" sentences a lot in these chapters. I didn't like  it in those other books and I don't like it here.

Overall, there weren't any big holy shit moments in this book. In some ways I like that, as I don't like thrillers where the twists get too out of control and could never have been foreseen, but it felt like there wasn't any pay-off for getting through the whole book.

I get really drawn into books by these authors because the titles and descriptions sound great when I'm in the mood for a classic thriller, but two books in I think I can say they just don't do it for me. I don't think I'll read any more.

Yes, it was full of twists and turns, but I found the writing style to be so distracting. It was so passive... and not just Lydia's chapters (as might be expected from a clinical psychologist), but Jessica's too. It took many, many pages for me to get drawn into this book. But eventually I did, and it ended up being a pretty good read.
