An Anonymous Girl

3.5 stars.
The synopsis was waaay better than the actual book. The book just didn’t deliver the way I thought it would.
Points for originality. A lot of psychological thrillers have a lot of similarities but this plot was very different.

I'd really give this a 2.5. It wasn't a long book, but this amount of story could have fit in a novella. Not a ton of mystery either.

I'm super finicky about psychological thrillers...too many of them rely on outlandish plot twists or endings to drive the story. But, I've figured out I DO like psychological thrillers that feature an actual psychiatrist or psychologist and that rely on the question of "who can you trust?" to drive the story. And, that's why An Anonymous Girl worked for me!

I liked this book! The pace was good, and I kept turning pages because I had to know what happened. I enjoyed the characters & how Dr. Shields was portrayed through her research notes. Psychology is fascinating, so it was really neat to see the encounters through both sets of eyes, and see how the situation was being manipulated. I felt that the end was a little bit lacking (it felt like it just fizzled out & ended), but I enjoyed it!

I had my hopes too high after loving The Wife Between is, but this one fell a little flat. I did enjoy it, but it didn’t grip me like I hoped.

The main motivations were what got me. I wish I had more context for Dr. Shields, she just seemed off. Unnatural.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. It had me yelling at it (like you do at naive characters in horror films) and closing it for the night saying aloud "what?!... this bitch crazy!". I felt invested in the narrative and felt like I knew a lot about the characters' personalities and motivations, which was great. I enjoyed trying to figure out what was going on and what was going to happen (although I was never quite right). I also thought the pacing was really great and there weren't many (if any) times I felt the story was boring or unnecessary. Great read!

This is the second book I read from both Greer and Sarah, and I’m really enjoying their form of writing! It’s suspenseful in a very different way. If puts you inside the character’s heads and forces you to see things through their eyes. I definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting an interesting suspense.

This book was frustrating, enthralling, and exhilarating all at once. Jessica enters a research project of Dr. Shields, but that research becomes a lot more than she bargained for. Morality, death, drugs, and trust are the core fronts of this book and I could not put it down. The entire book I was going back and forth on who the crazy one was, and wondering how was this all going to unravel.

I know this isn’t a super popular rating for this book and that’s okay. I can see why people love it, or at least like it more than I did. And there were moments when reading that I thought I’d give it three or even four stars. But at the end of the day and the book, I can’t in good conscience give it higher than a 2.5.

I’m disappointed because I LOVED the wife between us and I know these authors are incredibly talented and a fantastic duo. They do many things well - like twisting stories so the reader thinks one thing when it’s really something else or crafting complicated and unique characters - but the faults of this book were far too annoying for me.

My main grievance may seem small but it bothered me so much I almost stopped reading on multiple occasions.

Lydia’s passive freaking voice.

Yes yes I get the reason WHY. But honestly the effect that was intended was not successful.

I was SO annoyed with her passivity. The way she sounded, her voice and the way things were explained during her chapters, was SO unrealistic and unattached when technically being told in close first person. I can get past the “you,” second person directive, but I can NOT stand being the passive voice.

“A cup was handed to her.”

Oh my god just say “I handed her a cup.”

Other problems were the stakes, the ending, and the revelations.

Not high enough.

Anticlimactic and too easy.

Not surprising

I wasn’t drawn in. I didn’t care. I didn’t think Jessica was in any real danger and I didn’t like her enough to care if she was.

Jessica was gullible far too often and her secreta and faults were either not large enough or explained away too quickly.

The ending was boring and I felt robbed and I just NEVER got that shocking twist I expected of these authors.

Alright so I know I kind of rambled but I’m just sad I didn’t love the book when I expected too. If you did I’m so happy for you but I’m not going to recommend it to anyone right now.

However, go read The Wife Between if you want to read a book by these authors or need a new suspense/psychological thriller/shocking revelation story.
