Like an American Girl book for grown ups (lol). It felt so good to read a non-contemporary coming-of-age story that feels like the time it’s set in. Framed around the life of Frances, a poor young Brooklyn girl in the 1910s, we examine her family - mother, father, aunts, uncles - and the neighborhood. In To Kill A Mockingbird fashion, we get a little girl’s point-of-view while learning of the deeper trials and challenges of the adults around her. A rich, fully immersive, historical read.
