I cried quite a bit reading this.
It's hard not to. We're still going through the covid pandemic in December 2021, and it's very strange to be reading the events of the the past 18+months, going "omg that only happened yesterday," but also feeling like it happened so long ago.

I think Chambers did a good job in "storifying' the facts - it's not cold and factual, but rather a collection of people's experiences. The hardship that those in health care and nursing homes went through, the hopelessness of contact tracers when cases peaked, the grief of those who lost family members and who were cocooning... If, like myself, you've been relatively untouched by the pandemic, it does share what others went through in a way that isn't unbearable but still communicates their loss.

It was also very interesting to read through all the crap happening on a political level. Most of the politicians get a rounded portrayal, except for maybe Donnelly, but it doesn't feel like that was the authors intent.

I'll have to reread it in a few years time and see how this book impacts me when we're further from this pandemic.

Ireland's boyfriend has a brilliant writing style. You would think it'd be difficult to read about an experience you just had/ we are still having, but Richard was able to make it funny, enjoyable and compassionate. Will definitely look out for anything he writes in the future.
