With the second book, Meriano has made this series into a must-read for families looking for books that are empathetic and thoughtful while still offering adventure, fully-drawn characters, and strong principles without preaching. Meriano threads the needle really well, making room here for themes of grief, love, and loyalty that are surprisingly nuanced for a middle-grade novel. I was happy to see that one of the main issues here is the distance Leo's role as a bruja puts between her and her friends and I loved how it was resolved. Really smart and loving, looking forward to more.

loved this even more than the first. the magic is more developed, Leo is even more of her beautiful and curious self, and we get 2x the amount of family (and spirit!) relationships. I just adore the LogroƱos and this series so much.
