I liked the characters and don't, in general, mind meandering plots, but I found this book hard to read. Minor characters would pop up many pages later with no reminder of who they were. The ending, too, was contrived and unconvincing.

Very serious and important sort of a book. I wasn't into it at all. Didn't help that like the Russian classics there is a rather large cast with complex relationships between them all and none of their names are familiar to me, so I struggle to keep up.

I always try to finish books that I start, even if I take fifty breaks to read other books in between. I have, unfortunately, "shelved" this book for the foreseeable future.
I don't doubt that my own ignorance of the culture and political context in which the book is set is largely to blame. The book is set in (wider) India, mostly Delhi and Kashmir. If you are, by chance, an expert in the conflict and geography of this region you may thoroughly enjoy the book, but the long, detailed and complex descriptions at the expense of plot and character development were simply too much for me.
I found myself intrigued about what I perceived to be the "main" plot, but it took around a third of the book to be introduced and many of the characters of this first part were never to be mentioned again. The story digresses into too many sub-plots to follow, and this is made particularly more difficult by the inconsistent time-lines and tenses. If you are a lover of plot or even character driven books, this may not be the one for you.
