what do I do with you, Isla? You've given me a panic attack plus an anxiety crisis, all because I could see too much of myself in that character who is divided between two cities, doesn't even know what home is anymore and thinks she doesn't deserve to be loved. All I fear and all I don't have - which is the relationship she and Josh get to by the end of the book. It's a nice touch, having all the couples mentioned and reunited at the end, but I craved Anna and Etienne a lot more than what Stephanie gives us in this book. Lola beats this one, and Anna is by far the best in the series.
I'm sad to see it over, though, even if it's not because of the main couple.

I feel like I may even drop this a star lower later idk I... was disappointed with this. I wish I'd liked this more. I WANTED to like this more. but it feels like it lacked everything I loved about Anna and Lola. I felt a huge disconnect between Isla and myself and honestly I don't even feel like I cared about... well... anything much at all in this book :(
I love Stephanie's writing but this just didn't do it for me at all. :/

3.5 I liked the first 2 books better... this was just meh
After I finished Isla and the Happily Ever After, I sort of just sat on my thoughts because I didn't know what to say. Now, I think, I can at least semi-coherently explain my thoughts. I liked Isla, but not as much as I loved Anna and Lola, books that will probably hold a special place in my heart forever. Isla and Josh are a great couple, though, but I couldn't get myself to relate to or like Isla. Additionally, I understand why Perkins had to do a lot of timeskipping, but I still felt like the book was too rushed--I don't know, everything felt so fast-paced. Okay, on to the good: the ending was amazing, and I love how Perkins brought in Anna, Lola, Cricket, St. Clair, and Calliope. Although all three books could really be stand-alones, Isla ties the three books together wonderfully.
I hated this book I had to force myself to finish it. So infuriating! I was so excited at first, I loved the first three chapters... Then it went down hill. I only finished it because I knew Cricket and Lola were going to make an appearance.
First, I hate reading about domestic life. Relationships are boring and they get together so soon! No tension, no sacrifice to convey feelings and all that made the two first books so addictive. And then we have Isla and Josh being disgustingly clingy. I couldn't bare it! I felt like puking and hitting them both with their whining and all that. They made such a fuss for being separated a few months. Little immature brats. Seriously?! Just a few months. It's not the end of the world, humans!
I despise clingy people. They are the worse. Learn to breathe without your partner, okay?
Second the incredible big plothole. Isla is shy, that's what made me love her at first, but once she gets Josh is like she forgets about that. She doesn't act shy around other people, she can talk back, she's not scared. A boyfriend doesn't cure your shyness! Shyness doesn't get cured! It's part of your personality. Ugh! And how can a girl that's shy and "doesn't want to draw attention" doesn't mind the PDA? The excessive PDA? The fact that she is half French doesn't take her shyness away. A shy girl wouldn't act like that in public! And it would take longer for her to be comfortable with her boyfriend, especially if she had a crush on him for so long! Is she hadn't been described as shy at first, just as socially awkward, it would've made sense.
Ugh it makes me so mad!
I liked Josh better in the other books, he's not as charming as the others. He just sounds desperate and clingy, too.
So, even if I loved Isla at first, I ended up hating her. I ended up hating Josh. I hated the book. My favourite part was when they break up (I actually cheered) and when the old characters make an appearance. That's the reason I gave it a star, if the old characters hadn't come back I would've just refused to give it even a star.

WHAT A BOOK.
Holy Hades guys. This book was pure swoon. It had the whole shebang.
I was told by numerous people that Isla and the Happily Ever After was not as good as the first two books in the series, but it just shows that it all comes down to the individual, because I must say that this was probably my favourite one of the three. Like, I don't even know how to compliment and praise Stephanie Perkins because my words cannot amount to the great volume of emotion that I experienced. She's such a wonderful writer and knows exactly how to hit you in the heart with the romance and drama.
The characters in this book were relatable, just like the characters from the first two, and it was so easy to just get where they were coming from. The setting is always right in a Perkins novel, so I don't even need to talk about that. Yes, Isla pissed me off a little bit, but her position in the relationship and her motives for thinking her own separate way were totally understandable and I really liked her courage and admired the stamina that kept her going throughout the rough parts of her life.
All in all, it was a truly fantastic conclusion to the lovely series and I am SO SAD that it's over.
To all you contemporary readers, I cannot recommend this to you enough.
Verdict: bring on book hangover #3
