A book that tells you exactly what it’s doing and is excellent at doing it. Not especially fun to read, but not trying to be.

Surprisingly, I haven't read this book before now, though it's been on my shelf forever to get to. I know most people read it in school, but I always ended up with the English teacher that told us "you probably read that last year so we're going to read something different" and I ended up missing out on a lot of classics. Finally found some time to go back through them. This book is really fascinating to read and I enjoyed the way the story unfolded. Even though it is constantly jumping time I felt oriented throughout, and I can see why it's become a classic. The way Vonnegut handles the unfolding of the story is simply brilliant, and it builds and builds to the end even though you know everything that is going to happen.

i recognise how clever and well-crafted this book is, and yet it felt like a very meh reading experience. glad to have read it, i doubt it will really stick with me.

No me esperaba llorar con el final, pero ha sido inevitable. Menudo viaje ha sido este libro. No olvidaré nunca esta primera lectura y no tardaré en volver a él.

Es lo que hay.

I've considered this book one of my favorites since I first read it half my life ago. And while the broad strokes have stayed with me all these years, I'm astounded by all the texture, humor, and awfulness I'd either forgotten, or that had gone over my head the first time I read it. I read it as a teenager. I read it at a prep school. So it goes.

This review is only to say that this is a wonder of a book, so original and so impossible to explain that it makes you just want to grab a stranger by the lapel and beg them to read it. I also want to say—blast prep school. If you have a favorite book you haven't read since then, you probably owe yourself a re-read. Who knows what you'll pick up the 2nd time around.
