This is a beautifully written, lyrical debut. My favorite books tend to be stories that break my heart and somehow still leave me feeling hopeful. The Map of Salt and Stars excelled at both.
This is own-voices for Syrian American representation. Like one of the two main characters, the author also has one Christian parent and one Muslim parent.
Lara Sawalha's narration of the audiobook is incredibly good.

What a beautiful and harrowing story. I have been wanting to read this for a long time, Thirty Names of Night has held space in my mind ever since I finished it and I am so glad I finally got around to this one. This is an absolutely heartbreaking and brutally raw story following a family fleeing the war in Syria told through the eyes of the 12 year old Nour woven together with the tale of a young woman who sets out on an adventure with an esteemed map maker. We explore family, hope, grief, bravery, and how far we would go with and for the people we love.
I’m giving this book 4 *’s because i think this is what I’d rate this book had i read it at a different time. I read this book at the wrong time for sure. In this weird pandemic time, this book required more brain power and focus than i seem to have these days. It’s a fascinating story - mostly told from a 12 year old girl’s POV as a refugee moving from Syria , through the Middle East and Northern Africa . The other story is about a young woman traveling through similar areas but 800 (ish) years prior. I am not the biggest fan of novels that use this tactic and right now , it made it hard to follow but i can appreciate that it’s a great story with well developed characters traveling in time and place I don’t typically read.

I really loved this book. It showed a lot of difficult and beautiful themes. I would listen to this while working, but it's not a book to listen to while you are doing something else- you will miss information. I kept having to go back and listen again haha. I would highly recommend it!
