“I wouldn’t mind having more scars if you could have had less”

This book was wonderful, and that line perfectly encapsulates how this family is so willing to give everything to get their love ones to safety. This journey is one worth reading.

I mostly enjoyed this book though I did struggle at a few points. This is about Syrian refugees in the present day as well as Syrian explorers centuries ago. Rawiya and Nour somewhat follow similar physical paths as well as life paths. The descriptions of the refugee experience are heart-wrenching, as always. It was the story of Rawiya that didn’t completely hold my interest, maybe because it was a bit mythological which has never been my thing. Joukhadar’s writing is lovely and makes me curious about some of her other stories.

Typically, I gravitate towards mysteries and historical fiction, but a reading challenge led me to this gem, which I found thoroughly enjoyable.

The book follows the intense journeys of two young girls, Nour and Rawiya. Its unique writing style was unlike anything I've read before, conjuring vivid imagery of a world unfamiliar to me.

SpoilerAlthough I was engrossed in both Nour and Rawiya's narratives, I was particularly drawn to Nour's story with her family, which I found more engaging. Nevertheless, I valued how Rawiya's story served as an influence and inspiration for Nour.

"The Map of Salt and Stars" provided a refreshing experience. It served as a reminder to occasionally venture beyond my usual literary preferences and discover new worlds. It is a beautiful story, beautifully told.
