I thought this was beautifully written but the dual timeline detracted from the main story.

The mythic aspect of the story did nothing for me. I would have loved the book a lot more if it had simply focused on the "today" portion. Or if the balance would have been more like 90/10

I was surprised how much I liked this book. A sad tale, with some happiness, too, this book is full of poetic description and meaningful talk and action. I loved the juxtaposition of the 12 year old Nour, a modern girl, with Rawiya, the heroine in her favorite story who was just a few years older. At times the language is a bit too flowery, but that’s a small thing in this big beautiful story told about the all too real Syrian refugee crisis.

Everything about this book resonated with me, from the modern story of Nour escaping a war-torn Syria to Rawiya's adventures 800 years before. I loved the side-by-side telling of these two stories, and enjoyed the parallels between them. The characters were developed nicely, and Nour's synesthesia made her a compelling character that gave me a glimpse into what it might be like.

This was an easy add to my favorites shelf. Very well done.

Started this for the Around the World challenge, and it sounded so good, but I just could not get into it. May try again later.

This took me a long time to get into. The holidays and kids being out of school didn’t allow for much reading. The beginning was slow, but by part 4 of 5, I finally felt invested and was able to finish the last hundred pages in one sitting.
