The historical parts dragged for me a bit even though historical fiction is usually a genre I enjoy. However, the primary, present day story was touching and compelling.
Be warned this book is an emotional roller coaster but so so good. It tells two stories like 800 years apart. The first one is Nour a present day refugee and the second Rawiya who becomes a map makers apprentice. I do love who the book goes back and forth between the two it is actually well done. Most books I read like this tend to get too confusing to keep track of each story but not in this one. They are very good parallels and compliment each other perfectly. I read a review that said if you are fan of The Kite Runner then you would love this book and man were they right. I loved both books and I would highly recommend this one.

This was a beautifully written touching story about family and the human condition. I really loved both storylines and all of the characters.

stunning, and well timed as war and refugees are on everyone’s minds. beautiful parallel tales of exploration and pain and loss, and also a pointed reminder of the continual devastation of imperialism.
This book was entertaining, and had a good pace, was full of suspense. However, there was a bit of a feeling that everything was going to work out - I wonder, is this book aimed at teenagers rather than adults? It was a nice read and made me think about how humans change their behaviour when in extreme circumstances.
