This was a good book in that I learned something about subjects that I had very little knowledge in (fly tying and underworld feather dealing) but the way it ended was kind of blah. I understand not all books can be tied up neatly but this one for some reason left me with a greater sense of "that's it?".
What a rollercoster. I couldn’t believe I’d never heard of this! Absolutely loved every second, and I felt that the author’s personal anecdotes were well-placed and functional to the text. Absolutely fascinating.

True crime is not always my favorite. However, this one was different- stealing birds, dead ones at that. I actually enjoyed the beginning of this book and found the story of Alfred Russell Wallace interesting. I never knew he too discovered the theory of evolution at the same time, independent of, Darwin.
I’ve read 3 books this month that highlight, in some way, the affect humans have on nature/ecology, etc. our greed and selfish ways destroys so much of our environment.

Welllllll this book was well on its way to being close to 5 stars until the author shared about his conversation with Edwin.
This book read like a fiction novel. It was intriguing and taught me lots about birds, evolution, and fly-fishing. I was held entranced by the mystery of it all.
Edwin couldn’t be prosecuted for his crimes because he was given a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. We later find out that he thinks he faked it to help get out of the sentencing??? All that aside, what really bothered me was the author’s language towards and lack of knowledge of ASD. You would think for a man who tracked down a feather thief and their accomplices, he could take more than ten minutes to research autistic people. “Ohhhh he had a girlfriend for 3 years!!!! He was quite intuitive and empathetic!!!! He didn’t puke his guts out because he had to make eye contact with me!!!!! There’s no WAY he is autistic!”…. Just because someone is autistic does not mean that they absolutely cannot form long-lasting relationships. It does not mean that they are completely apathetic or lacking emotion. It’s not like neurotypical people get these things 100% while neurodivergent folks get 0%. IT’S A SPECTRUM, BUD.
If you’re gonna speak about something and publish it, research it. Otherwise, kindly shut the fuck up :) You very easily could have reported that you asked Edwin about the diagnosis etc etc without outing yourself as an ableist shithead.
