This took a little bit to get going. The first few chapters focus on the history of the feather trade, and they get pretty long-winded. Where the book shines, however, is in the second half, as the author details his own investigation into the locations of the remaining stolen skins. The crime itself is unique, but ultimately this piece explores exactly the kind of culture and environment in the fly-tying community that led to the theft itself as well as the disguising of their own benefits from it. A truly fascinating tale.

Since I finished this book roughly two months ago, it has not left my brain alone!

It's seeped itself into my poetry, my journal, even my DND campaign????? HEllo?

I can't get over this story, it's absolutely mind-boggling to me, the mystery, the blatant disrespect for natural history, the history, hobbies, and interests I didn't even know existed, how leftover classist ideals still appear in today's world.

I really really really REALLY loved this book, and I honestly don't know why I picked it.

There was a bit of a theme for 2019, of reading in genres I had previously not been that into. I think part of that was the realization that being an English major, I had read a lot of cannon classic lit, across a lot of different fields to be sure, but still a lot of classics. So this was probably shelved in the to-read shelf as a reaction to that.

I'm so glad I found it because I've been recommending it to so many people, (even the people I play DND with, cause I accidentally halted the campaign to tell everyone about this book, and they all got into it)

I really hope to find more books that are similar to this one, because I'm not ready to let it go.

4.5 stars!

Such a fun true crime mystery. Everything from history, fashion, psychological diagnostics and fly-tying. I had no idea such a wide variety of subjects could be related.

After hearing about this story on the radio along with an interview with the author, I knew I had to read it. I applaud the author's perseverance to uncover what he did. I wish it had a different ending but it goes to further demonstrate the negatives in the world.

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

Wasn’t feeling it

This story is bananas, and I'm so glad I read it. It's wonderfully written and engaging from start of finish. It has the pacing of a thriller but the subject matter ranges from Victorian hat fashions, rare birds, science and exploration, fly fishing, and museum heists. Highly recommend giving this book a try.

This book was interesting and exactly about its title. However, the historical account of feather use quickly turned into a pure focus on fly fishing, which I wasn’t expecting. Interesting but wouldn’t recommend.
