Memoirs of a time gone by, Patti Smith has done me absolutely no favours in my everliving quest to travel back in time to ‘The Chelsea Hotel’ in the Roaring 70s. I can only dream of living a life even half as fulfilling. Patti Smith, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing yours & Robert Maplethorpes story. Truly one of the best Books I have read to date.

I thought the story was really beautiful and i loved her voice as a writer, but i found it really difficult to read because i didn’t know the majority of the artists and musicians being referenced and there were constantly new names coming up that i didn’t recognize which often made it hard to follow.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I felt it was really inspiring in an artistic sense but lacked in other areas. I know it’s a memoir but I did feel a little bored at times, like she was just recounting a series of things that happened without exploring her feelings along the way.

Nevertheless, she turned it around by the end (tore me apart). I knew what was coming but Patti managed to tie it all up in such a poetic way that it almost seemed like fiction. Just wish she approached the rest of the book with as much depth, because clearly she’s capable of it.
