I have really got to start writing down where I hear about books, because I want to know where the quality middle grade recs are coming from! Sometimes when I read middle grade, I wonder if my older perspective skews my feelings. In this case, it is so easy to imagine how much my kids would have loved this book between ages 8-10. The stakes were real without being truly scary, and the useful skills essays that are interspersed with the chapters would have been a big hit. They would have been attempting Morse code and tying knots all around the house. I liked that the world was just a little off of our reality, which I think helps with that not truly scary aspect, and that there were highly competent kids *and* adults in the story.
What knocks this down to 4.5 for me is the repeated use of real for really or very—real scary, real funny, real quick. I can accept a verbal tic for a character, but this was so much that it was grating, plus I think we underestimate the vocabulary of middle graders when we don’t just use stronger words to convey the intensity of something.

A really fun read! And I LOVED the many illustrations, many of which are incorporated into the typesetting of the page. If you read this as an ebook, make sure you still get to see the illustrations!!
When you’re immersed in the book, it really works. It’s gripping and thrilling - but once you’re not in it, it can seem kind of thin, and the world’s not terribly convincing. So just go along for the ride
