Four Dead Queens

Astrid Scholte

3.71 AVERAGE

It’s a murder mystery with, you guessed it, Queens who’ve been murdered in a new fantasy/dystopian feeling world... There are a TON of twists, several changing perspectives (while I see the purpose, it’s still not my favorite), and a tiny bit of romance.
Not my favorite book I’ve read this year, but it hooked me enough that I actually finished it! ;)

This book was mismarketed. While it is a mystery, the publishers undershot the opportunity to market the book as fantasy murder mystery minus the romance.

The book was good for what it was. The mystery was very predictable for any seasoned mystery reader, especially when it comes to YA. But the twist near the end was enough to save the book enough to be called a mystery.

The main character, Keralie, was not very imaginative. Her backstory was very generic and unimaginative. Her sudden romance with Varin was abrupt and unconvincing. I did not mind the multiple points of view in the story. I think reading the multiple views of the four queens was another redeeming plot in this book.

There was a lot more plot development that could have been done to the four kingdoms. It was barely explained through the queens how each kingdom was ran. The dynamic between the queens and the history was well written. I think I would have liked this book more if it was not a murder mystery but a fantasy book about a coup to overthrow a kingdom...

I liked this! It was interesting.

You know when you read a book and it’s not like OMG-rip-your-hair-our-good, but it’s still VERY good? That was this for me. A pleasant stand-alone with a decent ending.

Keralie was likable, funny, and bold; something I always appreciate in female characters.

Varin had to grow on me a little, but when he did he stuck. I liked that he didn’t stay rigid and stuck in his Eonist ways for too long. Lest he wanted to face my wrath....⚔️

Mackiel was a gigantic...I won’t spoil it lmao.

What?
He was gigantic....
I’m not lying...🤷‍♀️

Anyways. It was a good story! I’m satisfied! Thank you Astrid!
