I’m torn between 2.5 stars and 3 stars. Parts were good, but I felt the writing was...off. I was hoping for more, I think. Alas.
I really liked this one. I didn't know what to expect but I thought the overall story was awesome. Will be looking for other books by this author in the future.
My Review: This one was ok for me but it could have been so much better. I really loved the main story of the book but my issues came when you were tossed into the POVs of the queens leading up to their deaths. It really made the story feel choppy for me. I wished I could have loved it but it just wasn't working. I really wished that the author (whom I loved her other books) would have summed up all the queens in the first few chapters then go on with the main story.
I really thought that the romance wasn't needed. It felt flat and rushed. I really loved Keralie but with being tossed back into the POVs of the queens I never really felt like we got the who perspective of her and Varin.
I think this one with the great world building will appeal to some but it really, in the end, felt like it had taken a lot of things from other young adult novels than just kind of twisted them just a little.

Both a fantasy and a murder mystery, this book was absolutely delicious, and what an ending!!!
This felt like two books squished together and I can't decide if I liked it or not.

World building is good but it’s lacking as a mystery. Author asks the reader to make a few leaps that result in a fairly mediocre reveal to the mystery. I left a little unsatisfied and wanting to lear more about the world the author had created.
So so SO good! I loved the alternating between the Queens’ POV and Keralie’s. The alternating narratives helped move the story move along and build the world of Quadara without dragging it out. Fast paced and full of surprises, I loved every word.
Some amazing tvvists and turns, love hovv time may or may not get tvveaked in the narrative, but the vvorld and characters felt terribly flat. As much as I prefer oneshots to series, I think this might have done better vvith more time to develop the vvorld.
I quite enjoyed this one! Action-packed, fast-paced, and great friendships and romances.
A great YA fantasy/mystery/romance to last you a few days. :)
