When I started this novel, I wasn't sure I could get into it due to the dialect and the pacing, but the emotions of the characters shone through to me until I couldn't put it down. The multifacetedness of all the relationships really struck my heart, and I loved Walker's handling of deep abstract topics such as love, God, and spirituality in a framework that was very true to her characters' lives.

I was not expecting such a dark start, but that’s on me for not reading the blurb/walking in with a better understanding of the premise.
I loved the part where they explain about the “colour purple”, about how that’s loving god just as much as going to church, for example. It was so beautiful and spoke to that feeling of peace and joy when you do see something wonderful or beautiful. It really is almost religious, really well captured.
