I listened to this on a whim. I needed something to listen to while I on a long drive. It was...lackluster.

I really hoped it would tell us about what happened, but instead of writing a full book it seems like it was split into two to get more sales.

Towards the end, Reeve was the worst. He only wanted to have sex with Janie. Like...girly was having a literal crisis about the fact that her parents might be kidnappers. But nah, he wants to screw her. Like chill out senior going for a freshman. I want to try to listen to the second book, because I'm actually curious about Hannah. But otherwise, the book was kind of eh.

read this as a kid, scared the shit out of me
emotional mysterious fast-paced

This book’s premise and last chapter STILL give me goosebumps!! I bought this book in fourth grade at a scholastic book fair so it also just brings a massive wave of nostalgia. Re-reading it as an adult, I’m finding a lot of red flags with previously “he could do no wrong” Reeve Shields but it’s okay— I’ll forgive him as he grows up in the later books.

I love Janie and the moral dilemma this first book raises. The mystery is so chilling.

Yikes! This book just went a little too slow for me. Although the Author's Note at the beginning was the best part of the book.
