very fun!! dragged me in and kept me wanting to read - only wish there was more wolf in the spy parts rather than the flashbacks

Not a bad story, kind of action packed james bond rambo style plot, it was fun but the character development wasn't there and it was kind of ridiculous and like an action movie, i like the werewolf aspect more, it didn't feel like a gimmick..

This was action-packed and thrilling, but a little too long. The last 150 pages were not as interesting as what had come before. Tighter editing would have helped quota a bit. However, McCammon deserves acclaim for his ability to create outlandish situations/characters and yet have it be so believable.

I was most engaged with the flashbacks and less-so with the actual spy-action. I will say that the WWII train scene was ridiculous and awesome though a tad anti-climatic. All-in-all this is a solid classic novel that presents a fun twist on the werewolf legend.

Exactly what it wants to be: pure pulp. Over the top. Exotic locations. Vivid, bigger than life characters. All with a strong touch of the gothic. I loved it even though it could have been 100 pages shorter.

For a werewolf story this was a pretty fun, albeit dated, romp. Lot of tropes, but written really well.

Great if you're in the mood for an easy read that will keep you turning the pages.

McCammon does something very unique with The Wolf's Hour and he manages to mix pulp with history extremely well.

The action is excellent.

The historical aspect is excellent.

The emotional depths it reaches is incredibly impressive. It captures the complex moralities of war with a surprisingly multicultural cast of characters, McCammon never forgets the true horrors that occurred in World War 2.

My one criticism is that the hammy love scenes just feel a little bit misplaced, it is clearly not McCammon's strong suit. The female characters could use a bit more fleshing out as they kinda feel like stereotypes.

Scenes from this book will stick with me deep down in my soul. Highest recommend.

🚨 New Favorite Book of 2023 🚨

Listen y’all, Boy’s Life is one of the best books I read in 2021 and Swan Song is one of the best books I read in 2022. Gone South is great. My point is, Robert McCammon is a fricking genius. If you haven’t picked up something by him yet, please do! And while you may see or hear more about the books already mentioned, I can’t recommend The Wolf’s Hour enough.

*Super brief, spoiler free review*

Love and war, Nazis and werewolves, a death train-this book has everything I didn’t know I needed. The writing style, the alternating timeline, the characters, and the settings-my god, the settings-are absolutely incredible. It’s a beast of a book at around 700 pages, but I never wanted it to end.

Boy’s Life and Swan Song may be the superior works of literature, but The Wolf’s Hour is the most fun I’ve had reading McCammon.

Did I mention the DEATH TRAIN?!? 💀🚂
