No Exit has 3 main bullet points :
1 although we all have different values and perspectives in the end what matters are the choices we make and how we act and behave and carry ourselves.
2 our actions shape the world around us.
3 there is nothing quite as fiendish as having your actions seen by someone else, for they alone hold the power to validate or condemn our actions. To be seen is to be judged and to be judged is to be controlled and to be controlled is to be severed from our internal thoughts and values; hell.

Being a short play, it tends to be followed by Les Mouches/The Flies, a tale of radical freedom and authenticity and they pair well together highlighting each other's main themes.

you know what? sartre was right. hell IS other people.

"Hell is - other people"

My new favourite quote.

What a play! This is a perfect book if you're looking for something short, but full of literal meaning. I used this book for a research paper and had literary devices galore!

This was part of me "1001 Books to Read Before You Die" book, which is pretty much the only reason I read it in the first place. I've heard the infamously misquoted "hell is other people", so I can see what that's referring to now. It's an interesting societal and psychological take on our relationships with other people and what true "torture" is. But I also can't say that I was truly captivated or any better off for having read it.
