The book had a slow start for me, but picked up towards the middle with some very touching moments throughout the rest of the book. The third to last chapter was my favourite to read!

This book came to me at a point in my life when I was struggling a lot with facing the reality of death as I'd lost two relatives in a very short space of time so I decided to pick up this book.
Kawamura focuses on the emotional toll that facing the reality of death has on a person- especially when they discover their own life is about to end- and how far someone would go just to live another day. The idea of robbing the world of beloved items just to gain another day of life is a unique perspective on the desperation and selfishness of human nature that I enjoyed Kawamura's view of very much.
I didnt particularly like the first two chapters as they didn't carry much weight but once the main character started losing things that were beloved by him or his loved ones: thats when the book picked up traction for me. The emotions and gravity behind his decisions and deals with the devil were ramped up with each chapter and that choice by Kawamura is what made this book.
I highly reccomend this book to anyone struggling with loss and in need of a book that resonates with the sad comfort of understanding.
You will cry.

I wasn’t sure how I wanted to articulate my feelings for this book.  There are some things I liked and things that I didn’t.  If you like pop culture references and lots of inner monologue (albeit simple imo) then you may enjoy this story.  I enjoyed the idea of “what we own actually owns us” theme that occurred throughout.  The main character is given the opportunity to remove items from existence in order to live another day, thus providing the reader with insight on how our lives may change.

I thought this book would focus more on the future impact of his decisions than on his past
I really liked how he questioned himself and looked at those around them to think that although this may not affect me it effects people I care about and in the grand scheme of things we are not more important than other species or collectives as each holds a special meaning to individuals

i was so disappointed to not have loved this. i enjoyed the writing and concept but i don’t think it was executed in a way that i enjoyed. i fully thought this would be a 5 star read for me so i’m a little disappointed to have not fallen in love with this book. however, i did enjoy the focus on the memories of the main characters mom and how he was able to further mourn her years after her death.
