The first book my eight year old son ever said, “mom, you have GOT to read this book. It’s so good.”
So I did. The sweet, sentimental twist was lovely.

the first book that I can genuinely say "finished in one sitting"

This is one of my favorite books in the Magic Tree House series! This series is a great combination of adventure, magic, and knowledge. It was critical in helping me learn to love reading and learning.
I was reluctant to pick up this book due to the current events unfolding in the world. I’m saddened and my heart goes out to all those suffering and innocent individuals. I hope we can soon find peace within ourselves and with others and learn to live with our differences and similarities as one. Life is too short to be wanting more than we already have.
This book tells a story of Jack and Annie traveling back in time to the American Civil War time period. The prologue gives away the purpose for the next four set of adventures, which is to find four special kinds of writing to help save Camelot. Although siblings, Jack and Annie have different perspectives going into the time period in the beginning. However, as they witness the events first hand and listen to the stories, there’s nothing left but the desire to help, to save and to remember those who fought.
It would be inappropriate for me to say I enjoyed this book. War is not enjoyable. There are many lives hurts physically, mentally and emotionally. This book made me realized what I had overlooked; it made me appreciate those risking their lives on the front lives; and those supporting the front lines. Through Jack’s eyes we see he was uncomfortable and reluctant to face the realities of war but was later able to be honest about his feelings.
This book tells not only an important event in history but also the surrounding circumstances. Through Jack’s reading of the reference book we learn the basics of the war; through their eyes we read about the wounded and the drained; and through their discussions we hear their stories and feel the soldier’s pain, sadness and grief.
Truly a remarkable read that everyone should read at least once. It’s simple and short but just as powerful and eye opening.

This one was pretty neat with them going out with Clara Barton into the battlefield and them meeting one of their ancestors but I do wish (like so many others) that it was just a bit longer.
Moderate: Gun violence, War
Minor: Death
