A book of ideas, the characters and plot aren’t hugely important so much as they are a device to draw and illustrate a hypothetical post-capitalist society as well as its dissidents and challenges. Yet this alone is more than enough to make it a captivating work of imagination. You read it because it thrills the mind. Certainly interested in checking out the other Hainish Cycle books now.

A really enriching, beautifully imaginative story that perfectly encapsulates the use of fiction and storytelling as a way of understanding the world.

I think my favourite thing about the story is the subtitle - an ambiguous utopia. It would be easy to take the stance of 'look how perfect and beautiful an anarchist society would be', but throughout there are reality checks - it wouldn't be easy, it wouldn't work perfectly and there would certainly be trade offs. The conversations and discussions around true liberty, and ownership, will definitely stick around for a while.

Doesn't stop me being convinced though!! Anarres FTW!!
