This is a thinking book.
It is idea driven, philosophical.
Everything is interconnected, interleaved, past-present-future, it is cyclical and moves forward.
The structure of the book is the idea in the story.

This was my first introduction to Ursula K. Le Guin. To be honest I initially found this book to be long-winded but the more I sat with the ideas the more immersed and absorbed I became in the story. I really enjoyed this story, and I just love how Le Guin explores a concept so thoroughly through plot and character - twas great :)

It's been over a year since I've read it and holy crap the content of this book is still something that crosses my mind every time I think about the future.

And when you look at when it was published your mind can't help but get blown. Really freaking good book, can't wait to read the rest of the serie.

DNF at I’m not sure where. Guy trying to convince the girl that she should sleep with him even though she has a bf because they “share everything” in their society was gross and I couldn’t maintain my already tenuous interest in this book. And I so very much want to like LeGuin. Maybe someday I’ll finish one.

Dystopia/ utopia reflections on life, work, relationships, possessions, how rules come about! I liked this a lot,  I want to spend more time exploring the universe !!! Need to read more of the hainish cycle !

Interesting illustration of a realistic socialist society contrasted with today's capitalist society. My biggest complaint it that it was unclear that the timelines alternated every other chapter (two timelines throughout). If this was made more clear the whole book would have been made more enjoyable and less confusing. Also some critiques on how the socialist society is portrayed (issues like racism and ableism not clearly addressed) and the results of the ending didn't seem like the clear goal of the book.
