The Dispossessed

Ursula K. Le Guin

I struggled to get into this book for about the first quarter of it. It’s much more philosophical than the plot-driven sci-fi I’ve been reading lately. But once I slowed down and started reading more for the ideas than the plot, I enjoyed it a lot more.

Very cool to see such a rich exploration of an anarchist society, and its comparison to a world which still accurately reflects our own. Le Guin has a great, subtle way of drawing the reader to the beauty of Annares society by exploring all its flaws and darkness.

I was surprised with how engaged I found myself with this. It really is a literary classic and a POWERHOUSE!! The beginning was a bit hard for me to get into, I think the high concept sci-Fi stuff had me reeling a bit. However! Once you get into the rhythm of the story, it is quickly understandable and VERY poignant. The structure of the story, cutting every other chapter between the past and present, really brings the whole tale together piece by piece and reveals everything to you in such an interesting way. The idea of an anarchist society is so fleshed out in this and it becomes so understandable and really makes you reevaluate things. I think the political messages of this novel are SO STRONG!! (Hot take I know…) but really it had a big impact on me. Anyways I think anyone who considers themselves a connoisseur of literature should add this to their repertoire…

Wow... if you ever wondered what the emotional journey of a revolutionary might be like, look no further.
