Back when I was a kid, "Congo" was considered the last great adventure novel of the jungle-expedition type. I've always wanted to find an author who wrote similarly to Michael Crichton, with the same brilliance and excitement - and I guess I've found that in James Rollins!

Amazonia was well-paced, intriguing, and reminded me not only of M.C. novels, but of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Rollins has his own unique imagination and style, and his work definitely kept me engaged until the very end. Not a small feat when I'm reading while sick!

I knocked off a star because I felt his female characters could have used more development and critical examination as people rather than women. A good piece of advice for those who aren't comfortable writing women as something more than either weak, wibbly messes or untouchable hardasses is to write them as you would write your male characters, and then simply change the pronouns. This is just a nitpick of mine, and not really a hill to die on; Rollins' work is good enough to excuse the minimal character development. And, of course, this was written in 2002, so I'm sure the author has improved greatly since then.

Criticism aside, I'm eager to read more of his work.

Shallow, predictable characters. Shallow, predictable plot. The last 1/10th of it had a little mystery.

This was the perfect action/adventure book to take me away! Good, strong characters, fun-filled adventure, diabolical bad guy, a good mystery, I just loved it. I look forward to reading more from James Rollin. Nice break from some hard-core stuff I've been reading lately.

4.5 stars. A medical thriller set in the Amazon was an insta-read for me. Featuring: a deadly plague, spontaneously regenerating limbs, mutated wildlife, crazy prehistoric trees, unbelievable action sequences and a pet jaguar. Could basically be the plot of an Indiana Jones movie.

This book was a very fun read. It's the perfect mix of thriller and science fiction--reading this book felt like watching the movie Jurassic Park. The story primarily follows a group made up of scientists and doctors, into the Amazon. They are attempting to find a cure for a disease that is running rampant throughout the world, while also trying to solve the mystery of a scientific expedition that went missing a couple years prior in the same rainforest.

The book boasts a great cast of characters all around, including the antagonists. The science and geography weaved throughout was well-done and informative. The story is well-paced, keeps you guessing, and is definitely a page-turner. I highly recommend if you're in the mood for something exciting and addictive.
