...or how i became a war criminal
Well i think this was the hardest book i have ever read. It took me about two years to get through the latin.
In so far as this is a Latin text with facing translation: i would give it five stars. Its a great first latin book, even though the learning curve is a bit steep at first. just done give up! i gave up a couple of times and went to read other beginners texts before coming back to it. thats ok too. The prose is relatively straight forward and not too difficult to muddle through. the english translation is literal enough that you can usually use it to figure out exactly how the latin worked. I recommend muddle through each sentence as best you can, write out your translation, then check the facing english. if you weren't quite right be sure to go back to the latin and figure it out. Before long you'll just be reading latin directly!
In so far as this is a work of history: its definitely worth reading but you should know that this was foremost a work of propaganda to try to justify himself. he was a war criminal and a traitor to the Senatus PopulusQue Romanus. Pay attention and you'll notice lots of things he conveniently left out. For example it starts out innocently enough pushing back some migrating tribes, then he is asked to deal with some Germans, and all of a sudden he is acting like he was made king of Gaul.
Sic semper tyranis! Caesar id meruit.
