hosen by P.C. Cast is the third book in the House of Night series, and it continues Zoey’s journey as she navigates the challenges of being a fledgling vampire with great power. In this installment, Zoey faces betrayal from unexpected places, deepens her relationships with her friends and love interests, and uncovers new secrets about the world she’s now part of. There’s a lot of emotional tension, especially as Zoey struggles with who to trust and how to manage her growing abilities.

I gave Chosen 4 out of 5 stars because while I enjoyed the action and emotional growth of the characters, some parts of the story felt a bit repetitive, especially in the romantic subplots. However, the stakes are higher than ever, and the book introduces new twists and darker elements that kept me hooked. Zoey’s character continues to evolve in interesting ways, and I love how the series explores themes of loyalty, power, and self-discovery.

The pacing is solid, and I was definitely invested in what would happen next. Overall, Chosen is a strong continuation of the series with enough intrigue and emotional depth to keep me turning the pages.

The third installment of House of Night keeps forwarding what the previous books have cemented: Zoey is a terrible, judgmental and "unique" purely because she is the MC; the prose is extremely juvenile, annoying to read and terribly written; misogyny, homophobia and all the kinds of bigotry you expect from two white american women are commonplace and normalized.

And yet, there is some part of me that wants to keep reading this series. I think it's the nostalgia I feel when I read these, when I remember the story that is to come. Somehow, even with their inability to write a compelling story, the Casts have managed to build a world where vampirism is still somewhat gothic and alluring.

This is this series only redeeming quality; Zoey's world is dark and mysterious, filled with the threat of the undead vampyres and High Priestesses, with simple ceremonies that just make vampirism as a religion for me.

Do not get me wrong— this book and series are still very very very bad. I could go on for hours on how plain BAD the writing is, how Zoey is just a stand-in self-insert for the mother-daughter authors and a way for them to fight back bullying from their school years. (I am assuming, but I would bet a lot of money that that is the case. You can tell they have a lot of vitriol towards teenage girls, female sexuality and any kind of deviance from heteronormative norms.)

In sum, do not read this. It is not worth your time. This series is only for the people who read it when they were a preteen in the 2000s and have formed some maladaptive bond with the HON world.

This book had a chance to be interesting, but instead it's all about Zoey's three boyfriends.

All I can say is, “what the hell did I just read?”

First, we need to talk about Loren. Like ew. What the fuck. I knew something was up with him too. Like he just seemed to love bomb often.

Honestly I thought he was just going after Zoey since she’s High Priestess in training, but the fact that he was actually just under Neferett’s finger and between her legs. Didn’t expect that.

He just seemed to know a lot about Aphrodite. Like he always had something to say about her. Which makes me think maybe he was fooling around with her too at one point. I mean he is such a pedo.

Speaking of Aphrodite, I can’t believe how much I ended up liking her. Like she’s still a bitch but she’s not so heartless. I am worried about the fact that she’s now human. Like did she give Stevie Rae her “vampireness?”

Either way I feel like we might see her again and maybe Nyx will forgive her. She did basically sacrifice a part of her.

Also really glad Stevie Rae is back. Well - kinda. Like she’s definitely not the same, but she’s also not one of those gross ass undead things. Really didn’t like to see her like that. It was kinda sad and annoying to see.

Finally our main girl Zoey. What a mess. She was literally all over the place and thinking too much with her clit. Like three guys? Girl.

The minute Loren started showing her too much attention she should’ve shut that down. Like it was already a lot with Heath and Erik, so to add him to her roster was crazy.

Also she was a little too full of herself. Like she went from thinking she was eh to all that real quick. I mean it didn’t help that she was getting all this praise, and to add on hot poet boy made it so much worse.

Now girl has no one practically. Except maybe Stevie Rae and Aphrodite. She might even have Erik. Cause even though he hates her for sleeping with Loren - understandably- he does know Neferett sucks.

There’s also about to be a war right now, so who knows maybe everyone will step up. Zoey’s tattoos have also continued to grow, so maybe she’s a lot stronger now, but I doubt she can solve everything alone.

Especially Neferett. Something tells me she has human genocide on her mind.

The book overall was a train wreck I couldn’t stop reading. The more shit happened the more I just couldn’t put it down, while also gagging on Loren’s gross ass.

Def gonna have to see how this all ends up.
