Each chapter of the book is a mini story and they are not entirely related so I guess it's just not my style of book. There are many stories that I wished she would have explained more.

Me gustaron muchas frases, aquí dejo algunas:
«You live there? The way she said it made me feel like nothing. There. I lived there. I nodded.»
«She looked out the window her whole life, the way so many women sit their sadness on an elbow.»
«I always cry when nuns yell at me, even if they’re not yelling.»
«And I think if my own Papa died what would I do. I hold my Papa in my arms. I hold and hold and hold him.»
«But I think diseases have no eyes. They pick with a dizzy finger anyone, just anyone.»
«Sometimes you get uses to the sick and sometimes the sickness, if it is there too long, gets to seem normal. This is how it was with her, and maybe this is why we chose her.»
«You just remember to keep writing, Esperanza. You must keep writing. It will keep you free, and I said yes, but at that time I didn’t know what she meant.»
«People who live on hills sleep so close to the stars they forget those of us who live too much on earth. They don’t look down at all except to be content to live on hills.»

My favorite books are the kind that experiment and defy genres. This is probably the third time I've read this book and it still feels like its the first somehow. There is no arc to the novel. We are told the whole lives of a character in a single page or two. Cisneros vignettes are magical and heartbreaking all at once.

The House on Mango Street is a collection of short stories based on the author’s experiences. It talks about how and where she grew up, what her childhood was like, what it felt like being a girl during this period, and how she grew up on Mango Street. How she wanted to leave but come back for those who cannot leave on their own. Vignettes of her childhood. It was cute, relatable, and something I might reread.
