Utterly fantastic book! I'm glad that this series focuses on different couples, because after this book, Samantha and Blake deserve some rest after all that happened in this book! So great!

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

After the Dark follows the events of The Gathering Dusk. Samantha no longer works for the FBI and has returned to her hometown in Alabama. The outcome of her last case turned out to be a humiliating experience. She failed to recognise that the serial killer they had been hunting was none other than her ex-lover. Samantha took this failure hard and sets and took it on herself to hunt him on her own while trying to figure out what made her fail to see what had been in front of her eyes.

Meanwhile, the killer is still on the loose and appears to be killing again. Needing her help, Blake came to Alabama to convince her to work with him to put an end to ex-lover’s reign of terror while hoping to pursue the attraction that burnt between them.

After the Dark took the reader on a journey filled with tension, suspense and non-stop action. Seeing Into the mind of the killer has always been one thing which fascinated the reader with stories featuring psychopaths, and in this regard, Eden did a splendid job. When Blake and Sam began their investigation, they discovered they are hunting not one but two killers. Despite knowing the identity of the killers, it did not detract from the tension as not knowing when they would make their next move and who would be their next victim made for some serious nerve-wracking moments. The main villain proved to be the scariest of all. His obsession with Sam made him unpredictable, which made more dangerous than his counterpart. Like most serial killer books, the reader has read, this was graphic and definitively not for the faint of heart.

Like most suspense books, the romance took a back seat to the danger and the investigation. However, the moments they spent together outside of the investigation sizzled and popped. Blake’s need to protect Samantha proved overbearing. His need to protect Samantha was understandable, but in his zeal to keep her safe, he ignored her abilities, which led to some missed opportunities.

Overall, the reader had a great time with this installment and is looking forward to reading the other books in the series. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading

Actual Rating: 4.5 Stars - Top Pick!

What a fantastic start to Cynthia Eden’s new Killer Instinct series. After the Dark was a high octane, seriously dark and twisted romantic suspense that was absolutely thrilling and everything I hoped it would be.

‘Once you knew that monsters lived in plain sight, it was pretty hard to trust anyone.’

I’ve read Cynthia Eden’s paranormals before and loved her writing voice but I’m new to her romantic suspense. So I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I should’ve known I didn’t need to worry because boy didn’t she come through in a big way with this latest endeavor. I’m not kidding when I say that I couldn’t put this book down. It wasn’t so much trying to figure out who the killer or killers were as that gets outlined in the first third or so of the story. Nope, it was figuring out how everything fit together, why things were happening the way they were, and how in heck it would all be resolved without everyone being killed off.

This story grabs you from the beginning and, oddly, even though it is in the blurb, you kind of forget the direction it is going at the beginning (at least I did) and it makes this story shock you from the opening chapter.

Samantha and Blake were great together. You really like both of them, and you respect Blake. The idea that he was attracted to her the entire time they were partners (which you get a glimpse of in the short novella at the end) but too honorable to act on the attraction made their story really compelling...especially onceyou realize Samantha feels the same way.

The serial killer plot was interesting. I liked that you know pretty much who it is and what is going on. The suspense is catching him, the pursuit, the twists and turns of the story and the mix of the suspense with the romance of Samantha and Blake.

Cynthia Eden is a favorite of mine for her ability to write a well crafted and well balanced romantic suspense. And, when romantic suspense is well balanced, they are some of my favorites. I enjoyed this, the romance aspects and the suspense as well.

I recommend this book.

this was just good. I didn’t hate it and it was definitely steamy and suspenseful but I think the reason I wasn’t overly impressed was the format / story unfolding.

The story wasn’t necessarily who the killer was but finding the killer (hence it being a suspense vs a thriller). I would’ve liked to have been guessing the entire way WHO the killer was and not focused on just finding them. But it was still a good story overall!

I’d recommend reading the (very short) prequel before reading this as it gives some background and context to certain things mentioned in this book (although it’s not necessary).

I read this via Audible & the narration was decent!

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book.. Samantha Dark was an FBI profiler. It turns out her ex-boyfriend is a serial killer. Her boss no longer trusts her judgement and feels that she let him get away. Samantha leaves the FBI and moves back home. Samantha is a complicated character who is very well written. As you learn her back story, you can feel her emotions and understand them. Her ex-partner in the FBI, Blake Gamble, comes to her to ask for help. He believes the serial killer has struck again. Blake is also in love with Samantha. He works very hard to control his stronger emotions around her. There are deaths in Samantha's home town. At the same time we are learning about Samantha and Blake, we also learn about the serial killer. I must say that Ms. Eden does evil villains well. This book is dark but it was a great read. I will definitely go back and read "Gathering Dusk" which is the prequel, and I will look for the other books coming out in the Killer Instinct series. Well done!

Well... That was pretty intense. I usually don't have a good experience with this author but finished this book in one sitting.
Definitely going for the next installment in the series.
